Linksys WRT54G How to I Set Up my Linksys Wireless G WRT54G with a Static IP Address?

**Please note that you MUST have an active Internet connection.

**These steps are for a WIRED connection only.

In this tutorial, we’ll give you a step-by-step guide how to:

  1. Verify you have an active internet connection
  2. Connect all the networking devices
  3. Check the LEDs (the little lights on the Linksys router)
  4. Configure the Linksys router
  5. Perform a power cycle

How do I tell if I’m connected to the Internet?

Before you begin setting up your router, please verify that you are connected to the Internet.

  1. Do not connect the router yet.
  2. Connect your broadband modem directly to your computer’s Ethernet port.
  3. Make sure the power LED on the broadband modem is on. Most modems have more than just a power LED.  Make sure those other LEDs are also on, or at least, blinking.
  4. Wait 30 seconds to 1 minute for your computer to detect the connection.
  5. Open a browser, such as Internet Explorer, and try to browse some websites.
  6. If you get error messages such as (Page Cannot be Displayed), please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Now that you know you are connected to the Internet, please disconnect the Ethernet cable that’s connected to your computer, and plug that into the Linksys wireless G router’s Internet port.

Don’t know which port that is?  Checking the labels next to the ports would help.

How do I connect them all together?

Your connection should be like this:

Modem (from ISP) -> Linksys Router -> Computer

Things to remember:

  1. The router needs a power source for it to work.  Please make sure the router’s adapter is plugged in properly, and that the router’s power LED is on.
  2. You must have TWO Ethernet cables.  One Ethernet cable goes from the modem into the router.  The other goes from the router into the computer.
  3. The computer may have several Ethernet ports. It really doesn’t matter which one you plug it into.

Checking the Linksys router’s LEDs

  1. Look at the router’s front panel.
  2. Make sure the power, Internet and one of the numbered ports are on.

There are a total of 4 ports on this router.  If you connected the router to only one computer, then expect only 1 out of the 4 LEDs to light up.

Configure your router

1.   Open a browser window such as IE or Chrome or Firefox.

2.  On the address bar (where you normally http://www.) type in these numbers:

192.168.1.1

and press Enter.

3.  On the Linksys page that comes up, look for Internet Connection Type , and select Static IP from the drop-down menu.

4.   Get the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, Primary and Secondary DNS from your ISP, and enter the numbers in the appropriate boxes.

5.  Click on Save Settings.

Perform a Power Cycle

  1. Turn your computer off.
  2. Turn your router off.
  3. Turn your modem off. If your modem doesn’t have a power button, just unplug the power cord.
  4. Wait 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  5. Turn the modem back on.  Wait 30 seconds to 1 minute, until lights appear stable.
  6. Turn the router back on.  Wait 30 seconds to 1 minute, until lights appear stable.
  7. Turn computer back on.

That’s it! You should now be connected to the Internet.

Now, if you want to add another computer, just get another Ethernet cable.

Connect one end of the cable to one of the other four ports on the router, and connect the other end of the cable to the second computer.

Perform another power cycle.  And that’s it!

With this router, you can share the Internet connection with a total of four computers, since the router has four ports.
